A Future Without Contrast Knobs
Motion-capture, Rotoscoping, and other mind-bending blends of animated and physical reality may be here to stay, but let "Renaissance" be a cautionary lesson. This severe black-and-white animation, a French import revoiced for Miramax, resembles nothing so much as a photographic negative, or, for viewers of a certain age, the indistinct mass of old scrambled cable stations. "Renaissance" takes the sharp contrast of film noir and turns the knob all the way down. Human figures are rendered in varieties of outlined silhouette, perpetually backlit. Every face is a halfmoon chiaroscuro. Except for panoramas of the futuristic Parisian settings, everything and everyone threatens to sink into background ink. The result looks sleek and stunning in stills, producing ready-made revolutionary poster art or full-page comic-book composites, but these etched, minimalist compositions fail when set in motion.
Cat Power Loves Chanel, Touring
We've always thought Chan Marshall was beautiful, but what do we know? We're indie rockers. We think brand new 7" vinyl is beautiful, too. Turns out the beautiful people think Cat Power is beautiful, too. And they know what they're talking about, or so we're lead to believe. Women's Wear Daily reported on Monday that Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld has fallen for the songstress, who "has been tapped as the new face of Chanel's jewelry collections." According to Matador Records, Marshall is not confirmed to appear in any Chanel ads at this time, although she and Lagerfeld have indeed become friends. WWD reported that Marshall was decked out in gold Chanel jewelry (a necklace, ring, and bracelet) at a party celebrating the release of Lagerfeld's compilation CD, Les Musiques Que J'aime.
Sunglasses showdown: How big is too big?
Sunglasses certainly are a necessity in sunny Colorado. But while the rationale of wearing sunglasses is clear, the rationale of wearing sunglasses three times the size of one's face is not. All over the city girls can be spotted attempting to mirror the classic styles of Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, and Mary Tyler Moore. With the recent influences of celebrities like the Olsen twins and Nicole Richie, there's no denying that big sunglasses have become a big trend. But just because big glasses are popular doesn't mean you must adopt them as your personal eyewear style. There is a fine line between fabulously glamorous and just plain scary. Too many girls are confusing bug-eye and race-car driver styles as trendy. The goal is classy, not creepy. Although I wear my oversized Gucci's with pride, I recognize the difference between approachable and standoffish.
Broken Ground: The hole in the city's heart
On July Fourth two years ago, eight weeks before the Republican National Convention in New York City, Gov. George E. Pataki traveled from the Hamptons summer home of his senior economic adviser, Charles A. Gargano, to the dusty crater in the center of Lower Manhattan. .
An autumn harvest of discounted home decor From fabrics in Sonoma ...
The lure of fall and holiday sales and the prospect of exceptional bargains were all I needed to come out of "retirement" for two special columns for Chronicle readers. This is the first "cut and clip" column covering all the sales from today through the first weekend in November. A second column will appear Nov. 8 covering sales through December. The sales are listed according to dates (although some sales occur over two or three weekends). Included are some popular sales that occur at this time every year, when manufacturers have completed shipping to wholesale accounts and are eager to clear out the remaining inventory. This translates as a bonus for bargain shoppers in all categories. Sales cover the gamut and include baby furniture, ceramics, faux flowers, furniture, linens for bed and bath, area rugs, fabric for home decorating, glassware, tableware, gifts for all occasions and more.
